Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has rejected the notion that the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) has hampered socio-economic progress for indigenous peoples in Fiji. During an interview featured in The Fiji Times’ “A Conversation with the PM,” Rabuka emphasized his desire to avoid divisive debates over race and insisted on the GCC’s crucial role in fostering unity among different communities.
“The Great Council of Chiefs is fundamental in advancing an inclusive national development agenda that can benefit all Fijians,” Mr. Rabuka stated. He underscored the importance of the GCC in supporting government initiatives around economic development and social security, particularly in addressing issues related to crime prevention.
The GCC, reinstated last year, is viewed as pivotal in promoting social cohesion and inclusivity within Fiji, according to Rabuka. In response to previous comments by Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry, who called for the GCC to bolster race relations and support national development, Rabuka reiterated the need for constructive dialogue. Chaudhry highlighted the GCC’s responsibility in fostering better race relations while critiquing constitutional amendments proposed by GCC Chairman Ratu Viliame Seruvakula, emphasizing the necessity of recognizing the evolving status of the iTaukei community without portraying them as endangered.
The ongoing discussions reflect a broader recognition of the importance of inclusive governance and indigenous rights in Fiji. Rabuka’s defense of the GCC’s role sheds light on its historical significance and potential to navigate contemporary challenges within a multi-cultural society.
