Unity in Healing: Methodist Church Backs Fiji’s Military Reconciliation Program

The Methodist Church in Fiji and Rotuma has expressed its support for the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) Reconciliation and Restoration Programme. This initiative seeks to promote healing and strengthen unity both within the military and in the wider community, reflecting a commitment to collective development and national advancement.

Reverend Jolame Lasawa, the Church’s General Secretary, highlighted the significance of the programme. “We are backing it, especially in light of the military’s ongoing initiatives. They presented the programme to the President and myself, and we discussed the progress,” he stated.

Reverend Lasawa also commended the government for its proposal of a Truth and Reconciliation Commission. “We are in favor of truth and reconciliation efforts. We have sent a representative to engage in the government-led initiative,” he added.

The Steering Committee for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission is currently consulting with various stakeholders, including leaders from civil society, faith groups, political parties, and media outlets, to refine the draft legal framework of the Commission.

The committee, chaired by Assistant Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection Sashi Kiran, aims to create a comprehensive legal, governance, and financial framework for the Commission, which will report directly to the Prime Minister.
