Unity in Education: President Katonivere’s Call for Collaboration at Teachers Conference

Ratu Williame Katonivere, the President of Fiji, emphasized the importance of increased cooperation and unity in the education sector during his address at the 90th Annual Fijian Teachers Association (FTA) conference, held at the Suva Civic Center.

Aligned with the conference’s theme, “Butu Mawe Solesolevaki kei na Cavuisausau” (following footsteps, collaborating and attaining excellence), President Katonivere underscored the need to maintain enduring principles, support transformation, and foster collaboration within education.

He acknowledged the crucial contributions of both current and former educators who have enhanced Fiji’s educational framework and inspired students to reach new heights.

“In today’s world, youth face various social challenges, including peer pressure, substance abuse, and cyberbullying. It is essential for parents and teachers to exchange insights and strategies on positive discipline,” he stated.

President Katonivere noted that the educational landscape is evolving, and the ongoing reforms and programs are pivotal to the country’s educational advancements.

He urged educators to actively participate in the progression of the nation, aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal Four regarding Education, and to stay committed to achieving national aims.

The President also extended his congratulations to educators balancing their teaching roles with motherhood and guardianship, nurturing their children in constructive, organized environments.

Reflecting on his own upbringing, he shared, “I grew up in a disciplined household. I learned to respect elders, value time, focus on details, make ethical choices, and act without seeking praise. My mother’s strict adherence to rules shaped my leadership style and my role as a national leader.”

In conclusion, President Katonivere urged educators to recognize the pivotal role they play in driving meaningful change that ensures the sustainability and growth of Fiji, our communities, and families. He highlighted that both formal and informal education play a vital role in instilling empathy in the younger generation.
