President Ratu Williame Katonivere of Fiji emphasized the importance of cooperation and unity in education during his address at the 90th Annual Fijian Teachers Association (FTA) conference held at the Suva Civic Center.
Addressing the theme of the conference, “Butu Mawe Solesolevaki kei na Cavuisausau,” which translates to “following footsteps, collaborating and attaining excellence,” President Katonivere underscored the need to maintain core values, embrace change, and work together.
He acknowledged the vital contributions of Fiji’s educators, both past and present, who have played a key role in enhancing the educational system and inspiring students to push for greater achievements.
In light of the challenges faced by today’s youth, including social evils, peer pressure, substance abuse, and cyberbullying, the President called on parents and teachers to share experiences and strategies focused on positive discipline.
He noted that the evolving nature of education necessitates ongoing reforms and adjustments to the foundational programs in the country’s educational system. With the implementation of the Coalition Government’s National Development Plan, the teaching profession is expected to advance significantly. He urged all stakeholders to actively engage in the development of the nation, adhering to the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal Four, which focuses on education.
President Katonivere also recognized educators who balance their professional and parental responsibilities, fostering nurturing environments for their children.
Reflecting on his upbringing in a disciplined household, he shared that the values instilled in him, such as respect for elders, time management, moral decision-making, and the importance of selflessness, were fundamental in shaping his leadership style.
In conclusion, he reiterated the critical role of education as a catalyst for progressive change that supports the sustainability and well-being of Fiji and its communities. He emphasized that fostering compassion in children and youth is crucial to achieving these goals.
