The Minister for Home Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, has reiterated his strong endorsement for the term ‘Fijian’ to refer to all citizens, aligning with the principles laid out in the 2013 Constitution. At a recent workshop focused on enhancing social cohesion in Fiji, he emphasized his firm belief in the unity of all Fijians, regardless of their backgrounds.
Mr. Tikoduadua stated, “Let me make one thing clear – I believe, unequivocally, that we are all Fijians,” reinforcing the importance of a united national identity in Fiji. He expressed strong opposition to any initiatives that could potentially divide the nation based on ethnicity or other classifications.
He commented, “Good sense says so, and it’s a principle I hold dearly. And I will stand in firm opposition against any attempts to change that.” He articulated that no individual label or background should serve as a barrier and that the diversity of Fiji’s population is what fortifies the nation’s strength and resilience.
In his remarks, he conveyed a commitment to embracing equality, encouraging citizens to respect one another’s unique perspectives and experiences. He believes that such mutual regard is essential for creating a future where every Fijian can prosper and fully engage in society. Mr. Tikoduadua added, “I am an iTaukei, Christian, Catholic—but, I will not claim to own “Fijian” unless it belongs to all of us.”
He noted that this inclusive approach would not only bolster Fiji’s social framework but would also enhance peace, human rights, and civic engagement. The Minister expressed gratitude for the collaboration with international organizations like the United Nations Development Programme, UN Women, and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, framing these partnerships as affirmations of a collective commitment to unity, respect, and inclusion.
Mr. Tikoduadua concluded by endorsing a shared vision for a cohesive society where every citizen is valued as an essential part of the Fijian community.
In summary, the Minister’s message is one of unity and cooperation, emphasizing that by recognizing and respecting their shared identity as Fijians, citizens can build a stronger and resilient nation together. This perspective fosters optimism and a hopeful outlook for Fiji as it navigates its diverse cultural landscape while striving for socio-economic progress.
