Former Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry emphasizes the importance of equal citizenship for all residents of Fiji, underscoring that this principle is crucial for the nation’s progress, peace, and prosperity. In his Diwali message, the leader of the Fiji Labour Party reflected on the festival of lights, which symbolizes the triumph of good over evil and encourages a movement away from ignorance towards knowledge and happiness.
However, Chaudhry remarked that while such ideals are noble, the reality often falls short of these aspirations, as unity in diversity has not fully materialized, with diversity frequently overshadowing efforts for unity. He stressed that it is essential to strive for a harmonious Fiji that accommodates every community, asserting that no single group can thrive independently; history has shown this truth through Fiji’s four coups.
He pointed out the interdependence of Fiji’s diverse ethnic communities, including iTaukei, Indians, Rotumans, Part-Europeans, Chinese, and other Pacific Islanders, in ensuring mutual socio-economic support. Chaudhry warned that true unity and peace cannot flourish amidst inequality and urged the nation to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination. He noted that despite legal protections against racial bias, discriminatory practices persist within the government’s policies.
Chaudhry believes the current moment is opportune for addressing these issues, especially with a potential Truth and Reconciliation Commission being proposed. He expressed hope that a united Fiji would provide significant benefits to the younger generation, creating opportunities that were previously hindered by political and economic turmoil.
He urged the youth to actively participate in the peace and reconciliation processes, empowering them to shape their futures. He called on the elders to guide and support the younger generation in this hope, suggesting that they will ultimately be responsible for nurturing lasting peace and overcoming future challenges.
In concluding his message, Chaudhry highlighted the necessity of collective efforts between the youth and elders to forge a nation of unity, peace, and harmony. Together, they can work toward fulfilling the dream of a truly inclusive Fiji.
This message serves as a reminder that through cooperative action and understanding, a brighter future is attainable for all communities in Fiji, reinforcing the idea that when citizens unite, they can work together to create an environment of peace and prosperity for generations to come.
