Unity Fiji has emphasized that there are currently no ongoing discussions regarding coalition opportunities with other political parties as they prepare for the upcoming 2026 General Election. Party Leader Savenaca Narube has made this clarification to FijiLive, noting that while exploring such partnerships might be beneficial, it is not a focus at this time.
However, Narube did reveal ongoing discussions with the Fiji Labour Party aimed at forming a partnership for the local government elections. A technical team from both parties has been engaged in drafting a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), although it remains unfinalized. Narube highlighted the potential benefits of this collaboration, such as sharing financial resources and improving the quality of candidates.
Once the MOU is completed and both parties are in agreement, it will be submitted to Unity Fiji’s board for approval before being presented at the party’s Annual General Meeting.
Additionally, Narube expressed concerns regarding the government’s failure to conduct local government elections as initially promised for 2023. He questioned what has caused the government’s apparent loss of motivation in reinstating democracy at all levels.
This situation reflects the anticipation surrounding local governance and the importance of political engagement in fostering democracy. Collaborative efforts, like the proposed MOU between Unity Fiji and the Fiji Labour Party, suggest a positive move towards more effective governance and greater representation of community interests. It is hoped that local government elections will eventually take place, allowing citizens a chance to express their voices and participate in the democratic process.
