Unity Fiji has recently made it clear that there are no ongoing discussions regarding alliances with other political parties as the 2026 General Election approaches. This announcement was confirmed by Party Leader Savenaca Narube in an interview with FijiLive.
Narube emphasized that while exploring collaboration with other parties has been a focus in the past, Unity Fiji is specifically in talks with the Fiji Labour Party for potential cooperation in the upcoming local government elections. He mentioned that a technical team from both parties has already drafted a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), which is awaiting final approval.
The proposed partnership aims to leverage shared financial resources and enhance the quality of candidates. Once finalized, the MOU will be presented for approval at Unity Fiji’s board meeting and subsequently at its annual general meeting.
In addition, Narube criticized the Government for its failure to hold local government elections as promised, questioning their commitment to restoring democratic processes. He expressed skepticism about the likelihood of these elections taking place in light of the government’s previous assurances for 2023.
This situation raises issues about democratic accountability within the government and the importance of local governance in Fiji. As political discussions continue, there is an opportunity for Unity Fiji and the Fiji Labour Party to influence local governance positively, fostering a greater sense of representation and community involvement.
In summary, while there are no alliances for the national elections, Unity Fiji is actively seeking collaboration with the Fiji Labour Party for local elections, amidst concerns about governmental promises regarding democratic processes.
