The 2024 Vodafone Ratu Sukuna Bowl competition transcends mere sports participation, emphasized Major General Jone Kalouniwai, Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, during its official launch at the Naval Base in Walu Bay, Suva.
This year’s theme is “Stronger Together: Building a Drug-Free Nation through Family, Unity, and Reconciliation.” Kalouniwai welcomed the challenge issued by Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew, focusing on the responsibility of both forces in contributing to a better Fiji.
“It is more than winning or losing; it embodies the spirit of unity within the forces and reflects who we are and what we can achieve for our country’s future,” Kalouniwai remarked. He noted that the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) has been on a path of reconciliation, seeking to evolve and improve its future direction.
Kalouniwai highlighted the Fiji Police Force’s ongoing struggle with drug-related crises impacting communities, wishing for all parties to uphold high moral standards as they fulfill their responsibilities in the lead-up to the event.
Chew challenged the RFMF, insisting that Nasova is the rightful home of the Ratu Sukuna Bowl. He expressed the Police Force’s readiness to defend the coveted trophy, which they retained last year after a draw of 11-11 at Prince Charles Park, Nadi. Chew emphasized a communal stand against rising social issues and drug abuse.
Vodafone Fiji’s Chief Commercial Officer Salman Khan acknowledged the nation’s passion for rugby, noting that the event allows disciplined forces to compete not just for victory, but also for a trophy that represents camaraderie and spirited rivalry. He encouraged players to compete with integrity, pride, and a sense of legacy for future generations.
The tentative date for the Ratu Sukuna Bowl challenge is scheduled for November 8 at the HFC Bank Stadium, with additional sports events planned for the same week.
