The 2024 Vodafone Ratu Sukuna Bowl competition is set to be more than just a sporting event. This sentiment was conveyed by Major General Jone Kalouniwai, Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, during the official launch held yesterday at the Naval Base in Walu Bay, Suva.

This year’s theme for the Ratu Sukuna Bowl is “Stronger Together: Building a Drug-Free Nation through Family, Unity, and Reconciliation.” Kalouniwai accepted the challenge posed by Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew, emphasizing the responsibilities of both forces and their commitment to creating a better Fiji.

Kalouniwai remarked, “It is more than about winning or losing; it’s about the spirit we share in the forces, who we are, what we represent, and how we can shape the future of this country.” He noted that the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) has been on a journey of reconciliation, seeking to build a new path forward. He also acknowledged the Fiji Police Force’s ongoing struggle with drug issues that are impacting communities, expressing hope that the spirit of the Sukuna Bowl will guide both forces to uphold high moral standards as they perform their duties.

Chew, in his remarks, underscored that Nasova is the rightful home of the Ratu Sukuna Bowl. “The Fiji Police Force is prepared and eager to defend the Ratu Sukuna tanoa,” he stated, expressing a sense of intrigue regarding the motivations behind the RFMF’s participation.

The police team retained the Ratu Sukuna Bowl last year after a draw of 11-11 at Prince Charles Park, Nadi. Chew reinforced the call to advocate against drug use, stressing the importance of addressing social issues within communities. He emphasized that the new Ratu Sukuna tanoa, unveiled in 2022, has one home—Nasova—and will return there this year.

Salman Khan, chief commercial officer of Vodafone Fiji, highlighted Fiji’s passion for rugby, noting that this event allows the disciplined forces to compete not just for victory but for a trophy that symbolizes camaraderie, discipline, and spirited rivalry. He encouraged players to compete with integrity and pride, reminding them that they carry the aspirations of past champions and the hopes of future generations.

The tentative date for the Ratu Sukuna Bowl challenge is set for November 8 at the HFC Bank Stadium, with additional sports events scheduled for the same week.
