Unity and Healing: Methodist Church Backs Fiji’s Military Initiative

The Methodist Church in Fiji and Rotuma has expressed its support for the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) Reconciliation and Restoration Programme. This initiative is designed to promote healing and foster unity within the military as well as in the wider community, highlighting a commitment to collective growth and national advancement.

Reverend Jolame Lasawa, the Church’s General Secretary, stressed the significance of the programme. “We are backing it, especially in light of the military’s ongoing efforts. They shared the programme with the President and me, and we had a discussion about its progress,” he stated.

The Reverend also commended the government for its initiative in proposing a Truth and Reconciliation Commission. “We are in favor of the concept of truth and reconciliation. The government is moving forward with this, and we have appointed one of our representatives,” he noted.

The Steering Committee for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission is engaging with various stakeholders, including leaders from civil society, religious organizations, political parties, and media bodies, to enhance the draft legal framework.

Led by Assistant Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, the Committee’s objective is to develop the necessary legal, governance, and financial structures for the Commission. The chair of the committee will deliver reports directly to the Prime Minister.
