Unity and Healing: A New Chapter in Fiji’s Reconciliation Efforts

The Methodist Church in Fiji and Rotuma has publicly supported the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) Reconciliation and Restoration Programme. This initiative is designed to promote healing and strengthen unity within both the military and the wider community, reflecting a dedication to shared growth and national advancement.

Reverend Jolame Lasawa, the Church’s General Secretary, highlighted the significance of the programme. “We are supporting it, particularly considering the military’s ongoing efforts. They presented the programme to the President and me, and we discussed its progress,” Reverend Lasawa stated.

He also commended the government for its initiative to establish a Truth and Reconciliation Commission. “We are also backing the notion of truth and reconciliation. Regarding the government’s proposals, we have appointed one of our representatives to participate,” he added.

The Steering Committee for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission is engaging with various stakeholders, including leaders from civil society, religious organizations, political parties, and media outlets, to refine the draft legal framework for the Commission.

Chaired by Sashi Kiran, the Assistant Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, the Committee intends to create the legal, governance, and financial structures necessary for the Commission. The chairperson will report directly to the Prime Minister.
