Unity Amidst Division: A Call to Opposition Collaboration

Speaker Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu emphasized the importance of unity among the Opposition groups, reminding them that they came into Parliament as members of the same party. Following the deregistration of FijiFirst, he noted that a by-election could have been a possible outcome, but that will not take place.

He addressed the 26 members, urging them to make decisions regarding their political status in light of the recent changes. He stated, “Before all this happened, I had written a letter to each of you 26 members for you to decide… what would you choose yourselves to be?” He reminded them that they now face the choice of becoming independents or joining other political parties, with some members expressing their intentions to operate as independents during debates.

Lalabalavu explained that by being independent, they are no longer part of a political party, despite their initial affiliation. He acknowledged their agreement to collaborate during business committee meetings and implored them to continue that cooperative spirit.

He framed the division into two groups as a demonstration of democracy, allowing members to work collectively. He expressed hope that, operating as independents under two working groups, they would still join forces in the House and maintain their effectiveness.
