The 2024 Vodafone Ratu Sukuna Bowl competition goes beyond mere athletic participation. This was emphasized by Major General Jone Kalouniwai, Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, during the event’s official launch at the Naval Base in Walu Bay, Suva, yesterday.

This year’s theme for the Ratu Sukuna Bowl is “Stronger Together: Building a Drug-Free Nation through Family, Unity, and Reconciliation.” Kalouniwai accepted a challenge from Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew regarding the responsibilities each force holds in working towards a better Fiji.

“It’s more than winning or losing; it’s about the spirit within the forces and what we can do for the future of our country,” he stated. Kalouniwai noted that the RFMF has been on a path of reconciliation, aiming to establish a new direction, while the Fiji Police Force faces the ongoing drug crisis impacting communities. He expressed hope that during the upcoming months, they would uphold high moral standards in fulfilling their duties.

Chew acknowledged the challenge to the RFMF, declaring that Nasova is the rightful home of the Ratu Sukuna Bowl. “The Fiji Police Force is ready and eager to defend the Ratu Sukuna tanoa,” he said. He added that, as professional officers, they are trained to be cautious and curious about strategies or power plays involved.

Last year, the Police retained the Ratu Sukuna Bowl after a draw at Prince Charles Park in Nadi. Chew stressed the importance of addressing social issues and advocating against drugs, affirming that since the new Ratu Sukuna tanoa was revealed in 2022, its home remains Nasova.

Salman Khan, chief commercial officer of Vodafone Fiji, remarked that Fiji is a nation passionate about rugby, noting that this event represents disciplined forces competing not only for victory but also for a trophy symbolizing camaraderie, discipline, and spirited rivalry. He urged players to compete with integrity, pride, and passion for their teams while honoring past champions and the aspirations of future generations.

The Ratu Sukuna Bowl challenge is tentatively scheduled for November 8 at the HFC Bank Stadium, with additional sports events also taking place that week.
