The Minister for Home Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, has reiterated his unwavering support for the inclusive term ‘Fijian’ as a descriptor for all citizens, as mandated by the 2013 Constitution. Addressing a workshop aimed at enhancing social cohesion across Fiji, Mr. Tikoduadua emphasized the importance of unity among all Fijians, regardless of their diverse backgrounds.
He stated, “Let me make one thing clear – I believe, unequivocally, that we are all Fijians,” reinforcing his dedication to promoting a united national identity while rejecting any attempts to foster divisions based on ethnicity or other factors. “Good sense says so, and it’s a principle I hold dearly. I will stand in firm opposition against any attempts to change that,” he added.
Mr. Tikoduadua expressed that no distinctions should divide the people of Fiji, noting that the nation’s diversity is a source of strength and resilience. He articulated that this shared identity is central to his leadership values. “When we embrace each other as equals, respecting each other’s unique perspectives and experiences, we lay the foundation for a future where every Fijian has the opportunity to thrive and contribute fully to our society,” he remarked.
Highlighting his own identity as an iTaukei, Christian, and Catholic, he declared that the term “Fijian” should be embraced by all. He argued that fostering this unity will not only enhance Fiji’s social cohesion but also uphold the principles of peace, human rights, and civic engagement.
Mr. Tikoduadua noted the valuable partnerships with various organizations, including the United Nations Development Programme and UN Women, which reflect a shared commitment to respect, inclusion, and cultural diversity. He called for a collective effort to build a resilient society where every individual is recognized as part of the Fijian family.
In summary, the Minister’s firm stance on promoting a unified national identity aligns with the broader goal of cultivating an inclusive and supportive society for all citizens. His vision presents a hopeful and positive perspective for the future of Fiji, where diversity is celebrated and everyone contributes to the nation’s success.
This commitment to unity and collaboration resonates deeply, especially in a world that often emphasizes differences rather than commonalities. The efforts to engage with international partners further reinforce the importance of this mission, highlighting Fiji’s proactive approach to building a cohesive and inclusive future.
