The Minister for Home Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, has reiterated his strong endorsement for the use of the term ‘Fijian’ to refer to all citizens, as outlined in the 2013 Constitution. During a workshop aimed at enhancing social cohesion within Fiji, Mr. Tikoduadua expressed his belief in the importance of unity among all Fijians, irrespective of their backgrounds.
He emphasized, “Let me make one thing clear – I believe, unequivocally, that we are all Fijians.” His remarks highlighted a commitment to fostering a shared national identity and rejecting any efforts that could sow division based on ethnicity or other differences.
Mr. Tikoduadua articulated a strong stance against any labeling or distinctions that could create barriers among citizens. He stated, “Our diversity enriches us; it is what makes our nation strong, vibrant and resilient.” He underscored that Unity is a central tenet of his leadership, and he believes that recognizing each citizen as an equal lays the groundwork for a future where everyone has the opportunity to flourish in society.
Identifying as an iTaukei, Christian, and Catholic, he made it clear that he does not monopolize the term “Fijian” as it rightfully belongs to all citizens. Mr. Tikoduadua also pointed out the critical relationship with international partners like the United Nations Development Programme, UN Women, and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, which assists in reinforcing the principles of peace, human rights, and civic involvement.
He concluded by calling for a concerted effort to embrace Fiji’s diverse cultural landscape and reiterated the goal of building a resilient, inclusive society where every individual is recognized as a vital element of the Fijian family.
This message not only serves to unite the nation but also inspires hope for a future of cooperation and understanding among all Fijians. Embracing diversity as a strength, rather than a division, could lead to a more harmonious and flourishing society.
