Acting Minister for Disaster Management Viliame Gavoka emphasized that the responsibility of disaster resilience is a collective one, not solely resting on governmental shoulders. Speaking at the Disaster Risk Resilience Scorecard Workshop for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in Suva, he highlighted the importance of collaboration across all sectors, urging leaders, educators, business owners, non-profit organizations, and citizens to actively participate in safeguarding their future.
Mr. Gavoka remarked on the persistent challenges faced by SIDS, such as climate change and natural disasters, which threaten infrastructure and communities. However, he urged that these adversities should not define the nations but instead motivate a united response characterized by innovation and collaboration.
He described the resilience scorecard as a crucial instrument, steering the nation towards tangible improvements in its capacity to withstand challenges, ensuring inclusivity so that no Fijian is overlooked. The Minister called on workshop participants to develop bold, transformative strategies that will enhance livelihoods, safeguard industries, and establish Fiji as a leader in global resilience and adaptation efforts.
In his closing remarks, Mr. Gavoka expressed optimism about the upcoming discussions, encouraging participants to voice their ideas to help shape a Fiji that not only endures challenges but flourishes in the face of them.
This perspective showcases a hopeful and proactive approach to disaster management, highlighting the potential for collective action to create a more resilient future for the island nations. By fostering collaboration and innovation, Fiji can set an example for other nations facing similar challenges, reinforcing the idea that resilience is attainable through togetherness and shared vision.
