UNDP’s Bold Digital Revolution: Are We Ready?

The UN Development Program (UNDP) and the UN Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) are advancing several digital transformation projects aimed at embodying a comprehensive societal digital approach for the future.

One such initiative focuses on digital identity, where these organizations are developing interoperable systems for civil registration, health records, and beyond. Munkhtuya Altangerel, the Resident Representative of the UNDP Pacific Office in Fiji, emphasized that these systems would facilitate inclusive access to public services and social protection, ensuring that no individual is excluded in the digital age.

Another key area of focus is digital upskilling, which involves customized digital skills training for civil servants, regulators, and civil society organizations to foster a digitally empowered and responsive public sector. Ms. Altangerel noted the importance of deploying digital public goods, specifically open-source platforms, to enhance government efficiency and transparency, thereby improving public service delivery and bolstering democratic institutions.

Additionally, there is a significant emphasis on infrastructure investments, with plans to collaborate with international financial institutions to create solutions that prioritize people and leverage connectivity investments.

She also mentioned that they are exploring emerging priorities by continuously looking for new digital divides and challenges, including responsible artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and efforts to combat misinformation.

“These initiatives demonstrate our commitment to engaging citizens not merely as users of digital services but as active participants in shaping their digital future,” Ms. Altangerel stated.
