Apimeleki Tola, the chair of the iTaukei Land and Fisheries Commission, emphasized the importance of a thorough understanding of iTaukei land organizations when addressing indigenous land matters. Speaking at the Fiji Law Society convention held in Nadi, Tola highlighted that land allocation among iTaukei tribes is traditionally based on distinct roles such as those of chiefs, warriors, and traditional fishermen, each having specific responsibilities within the community.
He urged legal professionals to collaborate effectively to navigate the complexities surrounding land issues and to resolve disputes with respect for traditional structures. Tola stressed the significance of recognizing the unique organization of iTaukei land, which is influenced by the roles individuals play within their tribes.
“It is important to be mindful of the iTaukei tribe when dealing with land matters; understanding the nuances and rules of the tribe is essential,” he noted. He added that traditional fishermen have limited land portions since their roles primarily involve the sea.
Additionally, Tola outlined the commission’s dispute resolution process, which includes informal gatherings aimed at resolving land ownership conflicts within tribes. He called for synergy between legal experts and civil communities, stressing that collective efforts are vital for the sustainable governance of iTaukei land.
“I hope the legal minds and community civil groups will collaborate to determine a way forward. My role is to provide insights on the operations of the iTaukei Lands and Fisheries Commission, while working closely with the TLTB,” he concluded.
This call for collaboration and understanding marks a hopeful step toward fostering better communication and resolution strategies in land governance, ensuring indigenous rights and interests are honored and respected.
In summary, Tola’s insights encourage a more nuanced approach to land issues, advocating for collaboration among different stakeholders to preserve the integrity of iTaukei land governance.
