The Taikita Brothers, a promising grassroots rugby team from Vatukaloko, Ra, are preparing for their first-ever participation in the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s tournament next week. Taking place from Thursday to Saturday at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, the event will host 16 men’s teams, showcasing a mix of local and international talent.
Despite being less than a year old, the Taikita Brothers have already made significant strides in the rugby scene, competing in three Fiji Bitter 7s tournaments. Team manager Mosese Bokini expressed their excitement about this upcoming opportunity, stating, “We are not even one year old, it’s hard to handle the boys, but now we are in the right position to compete against the best.”
The team comprises local village boys, primarily farmers, who formed the club after separating from the Naiyalayala Rugby Club to carve out their unique identity. Bokini emphasized the club’s mission to channel the youth’s energy into sports and steer them away from drugs that could damage their futures. He remarked, “We started this club to drive the boys more into sports and not drugs.”
As the only grassroots team in the tournament, the Taikita Brothers aspire to face off against established international players, aiming to inspire other youth teams by demonstrating that great achievements are possible regardless of a team’s age or experience. The players have been diligently preparing by watching Fiji 7s and Drua matches online.
Bokini also extended his gratitude to their supporters from Vatukaloko and their hosts in Semo, Nadroga, appreciating their hospitality and encouragement. “This journey is for our vanua and the love of rugby. We are ready to give our best,” he stated.
Overall, the Taikita Brothers’ debut at the Coral Coast 7s not only represents a significant milestone for their team but also serves as an inspiration for young athletes across Fiji, showcasing the potential for grassroots teams to shine on an international stage. The tournament promises to be a lively event, filled with enthusiasm and the spirit of competition, highlighting the hope and ambition within Fiji’s rugby community.
