The inaugural leg of the Fiji Sports Council’s Under-20 sevens rugby tournament commenced at Thomson Park in Navua yesterday, featuring 16 men’s teams and six women’s teams competing in an exciting one-day event.

Tiko Matawalu, the tournament director, emphasized the importance of providing a platform for Under-20 players, who often find themselves overshadowed in larger competitions. He stated, “They deserve their space,” acknowledging that these young athletes typically compete alongside open-grade teams, which tend to dominate the spotlight.

Matawalu expressed gratitude to the Fiji Sports Council for organizing this tournament, which he views as an essential opportunity for young male and female players to display their talents. He highlighted the solidarity and encouragement from parents and guardians, noting that it contributes significantly to the players’ confidence on the field. “Knowing that the space is safe for their children makes a difference, and that’s what we are supporting and delivering,” he remarked.

This event not only champions the players’ skills but also builds a supportive community around them, creating a nurturing environment that fosters talent in Fiji’s rugby future.

In summary, the tournament is a significant step towards recognizing and promoting youth talent in rugby, showcasing the potential of young athletes while encouraging family and community involvement in sports. This initiative reflects a hopeful and positive vision for the future of rugby in Fiji, where young athletes can thrive in an environment designed for their success.
