The Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) has discovered that several businesses in Suva have made unauthorized connections to the wastewater system. This issue came to light following reports of sewage overflow on Cumming Street, prompting an investigation by WAF. The CEO, Dr. Amit Chanan, revealed that a smoke test survey had identified 11 businesses with illegal stormwater connections.
Dr. Chanan noted that a staggering 78% of connections in the Suva Central Business District have been found to be illegal. In light of these findings, WAF has reached out to the affected businesses, instructing them to establish proper stormwater connections to mitigate the issue.
WAF has emphasized the importance of compliance, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall, which can exacerbate the situation by overloading wastewater lines and pumps, leading to additional overflows. The authority is urging customers to check their stormwater connections and to cease any practices of discharging stormwater into the sewer system.
This situation highlights the critical need for all businesses to adhere to appropriate regulations to protect the community’s infrastructure and environment. By addressing these illegal connections, the Water Authority is taking steps to ensure a cleaner and more efficient wastewater system for the residents of Suva.
In summary, the Water Authority of Fiji is actively working to resolve illegal stormwater connections in Suva, reinforcing the importance of compliance to safeguard both infrastructure and public health. This reinforces the value of cooperation between public authorities and businesses in maintaining community standards.
