Spanish authorities have achieved a significant breakthrough in the fight against drug trafficking by seizing 13 metric tonnes of cocaine hidden in a shipment of bananas. The illegal cargo arrived at the southern port of Algeciras on November 7, having come from Ecuador, which is renowned as the world’s largest banana exporter. This seizure marks the second largest cocaine haul ever recorded in Europe and one of the largest globally.
The Policía Nacional of Spain found that some of the packages were labeled with the name “Fiji,” though the ultimate destination of the drugs remains unclear. The authorities were alerted to this suspicious shipment after receiving a tip from Ecuadorian counterparts, prompting a heightened surveillance effort.
In connection with the seizure, a woman associated with the importing company was arrested; however, two managers of the firm are reportedly still at large. Pio Tikoduadua, Spain’s Minister for Home Affairs, expressed relief that these drugs were intercepted before they could reach their intended recipients. He emphasized the importance of international collaboration, stating that the interception exemplifies how effective partnerships among nations can be in managing the drug trade.
