UN Declaration Moves Forward: A New Era for iTaukei Empowerment?

The iTaukei Affairs Ministry is set to present a document to the Cabinet regarding the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The ministry is currently completing the final phase of consultations on the proposed declaration.

Last week, Minister Ifereimi Vasu informed Parliament that there would be a review of laws and regulations concerning indigenous natural resources. “The localization process for the UNDRIP is currently underway,” stated Mr. Vasu. He emphasized that reviewing these laws is essential for alleviating poverty among the iTaukei community.

Mr. Vasu asserted that developing a vibrant rural economy that makes use of natural resources from both land and sea would offer another avenue for village support. He added, “Rejecting drugs is not solely about traditional leadership; it also involves leveraging our natural resources to combat poverty. The Government is already taking solid steps towards this goal.”

He also mentioned that a review of iTaukei institutions is in progress, aimed at fostering economic empowerment and enhancing traditional governance. “Under the leadership of the GCC, we will be restored, strengthened, and empowered, and we will succeed in this endeavor.”
