Ubayd Haider has characterized his upcoming fight for the vacant IBO (International Boxing Organisation) Oceania-Orient featherweight title against China’s Runqi Zhou as a significant challenge in his boxing career.
“My preparation for this match began this week after an extended break, and I am committed to leaving no stone unturned,” Haider stated. He acknowledged a drawback in his training, noting the lack of sparring partners available in Fiji.
“I will be focusing on training solo,” he added. Haider emphasized the toughness of his opponent, indicating that he will need to match Zhou’s skills in the ring. “Zhou has a high work rate; while I do not think he has exceptional power, he is proficient in boxing.”
The match is scheduled to take place at Prince Charles Park in Nadi on October 26. “I’ve been training alone due to work commitments and the timing of the fight,” he explained, mentioning he trains at the Uptown boxing gym in Suva.
Haider is encouraging fans to attend what he promises will be an intense bout. “It will be a fierce contest, with both of us likely to sustain injuries,” he warned. He respects Zhou’s training team, who includes world champions like the Maloney twins, Alex Winwood, and Bruno Tarimo. “Facing him will be a tough challenge.”
He expressed confidence that some of his critics would come to watch the fight, expecting him to lose. “I am determined to prepare well and deliver an exciting match,” he said. “Like every other fighter, my goal is victory.”
Haider believes his boxing footwork and height advantage will serve him well against Runqi Zhou. He also expressed gratitude towards South Pacific Boxing Promotions and Amarok Accessories for their support.
