Turning the Tide: Community Clean-Up Uncovers Alarming Waste Crisis in Koronivia

Amitesh Deo, chief executive of the Pacific Recycling Foundation, emphasized that waste management should be a shared responsibility among all citizens. His remarks followed a cleanup initiative that resulted in the collection of 596 kilograms of general waste and recyclables along Koronivia Road in Nausori on Friday.

The cleanup was a collaborative effort involving the Pacific Recycling Foundation, Waste Recyclers Fiji Limited, Malhana Cloud Kitchen, the Koronivia Business Council, and local residents. The campaign commenced at the Koronivia Roundabout and continued to the Shiv Krish Temple on Kabutri Drive, targeting an area severely affected by improper waste disposal that posed risks to the environment and public health.

“The volume of waste we gathered in just two hours underscores the pressing need for collective action to abandon a throwaway culture and take ownership of our waste. We must all commit to maintaining the cleanliness and greenery of Koronivia for future generations,” Deo stated.

The cleanup revealed a range of household waste and recyclables, including baby diapers, PET bottles, construction debris, beer bottles and cans, takeaway food containers, clothing, razors, and cartons filled with unused items. Many of these items were discovered blocking drains following recent grass-cutting activities by the Fiji Roads Authority.

Deo expressed disappointment that some waste was left behind due to accessibility issues with the waterlogged drains, which could harbor hazardous objects posing injury risks to volunteers.

The total collected included 500 kilograms of general waste, 60 kilograms of PET bottles, and 36 kilograms of aluminum cans, marking a noticeable increase in waste levels compared to earlier cleanup events and highlighting a concerning lack of responsibility among locals and visitors.

“This effort extends beyond mere cleanup; it’s about shifting attitudes. We urge everyone to evaluate their habits and make intentional choices that benefit our environment,” he said.

Deo also conveyed appreciation to the Fiji Police Force for their support in ensuring safety and traffic management during the cleanup event.
