Turmeric: Fiji’s Billion-Dollar Secret?

Turmeric is emerging as a vital component of Fiji’s export market, catching the attention of lawmakers. During a recent parliamentary session, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica, indicated that turmeric could represent a billion-dollar opportunity for the nation’s trade sector.

According to data from the Bureau of Statistics, Fiji exported $24.8 million worth of turmeric to countries including the United States, New Zealand, Canada, Singapore, and Tuvalu in 2023. This marked an increase from the previous year’s exports, which were valued at $21.6 million, amounting to roughly 2,500 tonnes.

Kamikamica noted that turmeric became a crucial agricultural product during the COVID-19 pandemic, with a significant volume exported to the United States. He outlined a vision where identifying approximately ten exports capable of generating around $100 million annually could lead to the potential for a billion-dollar market, positioning turmeric as one of these promising exports.

Despite its growth potential, the turmeric industry faces challenges, particularly with price fluctuations that can impact farmers’ incomes. Kamikamica acknowledged that these price changes pose a dilemma for farmers striving to sustain their livelihoods.

He pointed out that, while there is some budget allocation for turmeric by the Ministry of Agriculture, there are no measures in place to stabilize pricing. However, he expressed confidence that the Finance Minister would find it necessary for the government to consider addressing this issue.

Kamikamica advocated for support mechanisms similar to those given to the sugar industry, to ensure fair pricing and to support further growth in turmeric production. The Ministry of Trade recognizes the significance of turmeric and is actively strategizing to boost its market potential.

While turmeric is currently cultivated in the wild across Fiji, increased interest in developing organic turmeric markets and expanding farming practices aims to enhance export volumes. The Ministry targets an ambitious export goal of $50 million and beyond for the coming years.
