The Minister for Justice, Siromi Turaga, recently sparked controversy within the Coalition Government by describing the intense media coverage surrounding the FICAC affair as an “obsession.” This remark came after a parliamentary inquiry about the ongoing situation with the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).
When approached for comments, Turaga was quick to question the fixation on the FICAC issue, dismissing assertions of ministerial interference. The FICAC has dominated headlines for several months, primarily due to the appointment of its commissioner, Barbara Malimali, who was under investigation by the agency at the time of her selection.
Malimali’s appointment was made by President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, based on a recommendation from the Judicial Service Commission in conjunction with legal advisor Graham Leung. Both parties involved in the appointment process have defended their actions amidst growing concerns.
Former Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry has criticized the current Prime Minister, Sitiveni Rabuka, for not addressing the situation more proactively. Meanwhile, a Cabinet meeting is set to take place today at the Office of the Prime Minister, where members will discuss an agenda item regarding the establishment and mandate of a Commission of Inquiry to investigate the FICAC controversy.
