In response to rising social challenges in the country, the vanua o Betoraurau is stepping up to enforce strict guidelines to minimize their impact. Na Momo Levu, Tui Sabeto Ratu Viliame Mataitoga, expressed his dedication to tackling critical issues such as drug abuse, food security, poverty alleviation, financial empowerment, educational quality, and ensuring the safety of women and children.
“My primary goal is to create a measurable difference for my community,” Ratu Viliame stated. He highlighted the significant hurdle of shifting the mindsets of community members, emphasizing that the solutions to their problems reside within themselves.
Since taking office, Ratu Viliame has worked tirelessly to fortify the resilience of the Sabeto people against adversity. A key initiative includes a mandate that prohibits kava consumption from midnight on Saturdays until 6 PM on Sundays, aimed at encouraging church attendance and fostering family bonding over Sunday lunch.
Additionally, a restriction on vehicle entry into the village from 10 PM to 5 AM has been implemented to enhance community safety and curtail the nighttime illegal sale and use of drugs.
“I remain dedicated to ensuring our actions comply with the law while we implement these measures,” Ratu Viliame affirmed, also voicing his support for the development of village bylaws.
He noted, “If the vanua Betoraurau successfully addresses these vital social issues, I will advocate for these successes at other forums, like provincial meetings and the GCC.” He acknowledged that a significant obstacle in addressing these challenges is the absence of formal legal authority, hence his strong support for the creation of village bylaws. Ratu Viliame expressed optimism that this issue was addressed in the recent GCC meeting and hopes to see further advancements.
This proactive approach by Ratu Viliame and the vanua o Betoraurau demonstrates a commendable commitment to uplifting the community and addressing pressing issues. By fostering a culture of responsibility and family values, they are paving the way for a more cohesive and resilient society.
This initiative reflects a hopeful optimism for the community’s future, as it encourages collective action and personal accountability among its members.
