In response to increasing social challenges, the vanua of Betoraurau has taken proactive measures to safeguard its community. Na Momo Levu na Tui Sabeto, Ratu Viliame Mataitoga, has expressed his dedication to tackling pressing issues such as drug abuse, food security, poverty alleviation, financial empowerment, educational quality, and ensuring the safety of women and children.
“My focus is on the tangible impact I can make for my people,” stated Ratu Viliame, highlighting the importance of self-reliance in overcoming these obstacles. He emphasized the critical need to shift mindsets, encouraging individuals in the community to understand that many solutions lie within their own capabilities.
Since his installation, Ratu Viliame has made it his mission to bolster resilience among the Sabeto community during challenging times. One significant initiative includes a mandate to cease kava consumption from midnight Saturday until 6 PM Sunday. This measure encourages residents to attend church services and to foster family connections over Sunday lunches.
Additionally, the Tui Sabeto has implemented restrictions on vehicle access to the village between 10 PM and 5 AM, a preventive measure aimed at curbing the illegal trade and use of drugs that predominantly occur during late-night hours. Ratu Viliame has assured community members that these measures will be enforced within legal frameworks.
The Tui Sabeto also supports the introduction of village bylaws to establish formal authority in addressing these social challenges, acknowledging that without such laws, efforts may face significant limitations. He expressed optimism following discussions at a recent GCC meeting regarding these bylaws and hopes to see further progress.
This initiative reflects a broader community-based approach to well-being, emphasizing positive family values and collective responsibility in the face of adversity. Ratu Viliame’s commitment to proactive leadership serves as an example for others, showing that with unity and determination, communities can address their own social challenges effectively.
Overall, this approach can inspire hope and drive constructive change within the community, fostering an environment of collaboration and empowerment as residents work together to build a brighter future.
