Truth, Healing, and Reconciliation: Can Fiji’s Commission Deliver?

Fiji’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission has the potential to aid in the quest for truth and create avenues for reconciliation, but it cannot ensure total healing, according to Ruben Carranza, a senior expert at the International Centre for Transitional Justice and a member of the commission’s steering committee. Carranza emphasized that the primary aim of the process is to uncover the truth. He noted that similar initiatives in other countries have successfully addressed individuals’ demands for truth while providing opportunities for reconciliation. However, he warned that the effectiveness of the commission will hinge on various factors, such as the implementation of its recommendations and the active involvement of the community.
