Truth and Reconciliation: Will Fiji Uncover the Secrets of the Coups?

Shamima Ali, coordinator of the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre, expressed her hope that the hearings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) will reveal the hidden identities behind the coups that have deeply affected the nation. During a consultation at the Suva Civic Centre, she shared her curiosity about who was truly behind the coups, noting that while many names have emerged, no one has come forward with clear information.

Ali pointed out that while some individuals have faced imprisonment for their roles in the coups, many others have escaped accountability. She highlighted that certain alleged orchestrators or supporters of the coups have thrived since these events, occupying prominent positions in society.

Furthermore, she emphasized the importance of including British involvement in the commission’s discussions, questioning why colonial powers are often overlooked in the discourse surrounding truth and reconciliation. Ali articulated the need for comprehensive and candid discussions to aid in providing closure for victims’ families and survivors of violence. She affirms that recognizing the multifaceted aspects of reconciliation is crucial to moving forward.
