Fiji Labour Party (FLP) leader Mahendra Chaudhry has emphasized the importance of completing the truth and reconciliation process prior to the next elections. Speaking at a meeting of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) with political parties in Suva, he highlighted the need for authentic reconciliation that does not compromise key democratic principles or the rule of law.
Chaudhry insisted that the entire process, from the TRC’s appointment to the submission of its report to the President, should be conducted in a transparent, independent, inclusive, and credible manner. He stressed that the TRC must focus on uncovering the truth surrounding the political upheavals and coups of 1987, 2000, and 2006, and work towards delivering justice to the victims.
“There cannot be genuine reconciliation without justice,” Chaudhry stated, pointing out that the impacts of the coups have significantly hindered Fiji’s development, pushing the nation back by approximately three decades and causing distress to numerous families.
He advocated for a pragmatic approach rather than a diplomatic one, aiming to create a sustainable framework for improved race relations that fosters trust, understanding, and respect among all citizens. Additionally, he called for the draft Bill to be made accessible to all political parties and the public.
Chaudhry was joined at the meeting by FLP vice-president Monica Raghwan and advisers Miriama Raiyawa and Satish Kumar.
