Fiji’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission aims to facilitate the pursuit of truth and provide opportunities for reconciliation, but it cannot ensure complete healing. This point was emphasized by Ruben Carranza, a senior expert at the International Centre for Transitional Justice and a member of the commission’s steering committee.
Carranza stated, “This process is for people to know the truth,” noting that similar initiatives in other nations have met the people’s demand for truth and offered pathways for reconciliation. “There is evidence that this can be very useful,” he remarked.
However, he cautioned that the commission’s success hinges on several factors, including the implementation of its recommendations and the active engagement of the community.
