Sainiana Radrodro, a prominent member of the Social Democratic Liberal Party and a lawyer in Suva, has declined the opportunity presented by the Leader of the Opposition to be nominated as the Speaker of Parliament. Radrodro emphasized the importance of the Speaker’s role being filled by an independent individual who embodies the principles of law and governance while also earning the populace’s trust.
In her statements to FijiLive, she expressed concern that her acceptance of the nomination could create a conflict of interest, as she is married to a Government MP who leads a political party. Radrodro believes that maintaining public trust in governmental institutions is paramount, which informed her decision to turn down the nomination. She acknowledged the good intentions behind the Opposition’s offer, but firmly stood her ground by stating, “For me to be nominated would be wrong.”
Additionally, Radrodro expressed disappointment that the details of her potential nomination were leaked to the media, emphasizing that this was a private matter. When asked why her name was under consideration, she highlighted her extensive experience in public service and her impactful leadership in women’s forums, along with her legal expertise. She also reiterated that she would have declined a nomination from the Government as well, underlining her commitment to maintaining the integrity of the Speaker’s office.
Radrodro’s name had been included among other potential candidates, such as former SODELPA MP Mikaele Leawere, former Deputy Speaker Ruveni Nadalo, and former FijiFirst Candidate Roko Tupou Draunidalo. The Opposition confirmed plans to nominate Ruveni Nadalo instead.
This situation reflects a deeper commitment to uphold the values of transparency and integrity within Fiji’s political framework, illuminating the importance of public trust in government operations.
In summary, Radrodro’s principled stance not only serves to fortify the perception of impartiality in parliamentary leadership but also highlights the necessity of ethical standards in political roles, fostering a sense of hope for a more accountable governance structure in Fiji.
