Leaders from the Pacific Islands Forum Troika are set to travel to New Caledonia this Sunday for a high-level observational mission. The initiative aligns with a request from the Government of New Caledonia and adheres to the agreed Terms of Reference, which have been endorsed by both the French State and the Forum Leaders.
The three-day mission will be led by Forum Chair and Prime Minister of Tonga, Hu’akavameiliku Siaosi Sovaleni, who will be accompanied by Cook Islands Prime Minister Mark Brown and Fiji’s Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. They will also be joined by Peter-Shanel Agovaka, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade of the Solomon Islands.
Hu’akavameiliku highlighted the significant public interest surrounding the mission. He expressed concern for the people of New Caledonia following the unrest earlier this year and reiterated the Forum’s ongoing support. “This mission emphasizes the region’s commitment to assist each other in times of need,” he stated, reflecting on discussions held among leaders last month.
The delegation will be supported by Secretary General Baron Waqa and senior officials, receiving guidance from the French State and the Government of New Caledonia. The leaders will tour Noumea and engage with stakeholders affected by the unrest that began in May, including local political parties, youth groups, and communities, as well as discussions with sectors such as private, health, and education.
The Forum noted that this mission arrives at a crucial moment as New Caledonia navigates complex political issues while addressing ongoing social and economic challenges. The leaders aim to gain a deeper understanding of local perspectives to facilitate supportive dialogue concerning New Caledonia’s future while respecting its current status.
