Triumph Over Tragedy: A Family’s Fight Against Childhood Cancer

For many parents, discovering that their child is ill is a harrowing experience, and for Meresiana Leba and Seremaia Namanurua from Wainibuka, their world was turned upside down when their son, Orisi Ratulevu, was diagnosed with cancer shortly after birth.

Although Ms. Leba could not recall the specific type of cancer, she felt relieved to share that the tumor affecting Orisi’s stomach was successfully removed, and he is now joyfully playing with other children in the village.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Leba recounted, “I didn’t get to see him for three weeks after I gave birth because they had taken him to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The doctors discovered a cyst in his stomach and requested we stay for additional tests.”

The couple faced a month in the hospital, culminating in the news that Orisi required surgery to remove the cancerous cyst along with the excess bile in his stomach. “I consented to the procedure, having signed all the necessary forms. The doctors explained that they would drain the cyst,” she said. “I was unaware at the time that they had removed his left kidney as well due to the bile’s effect on it.”

Now a healthy one-year-old, Orisi follows strict dietary guidelines due to the surgery he underwent. His parents have been advised against giving him cold food or drinks, and he must be kept warm at all times. He eats only fruits and vegetables, avoiding all meat and powdered milk.

Despite the challenging restrictions, Orisi is thriving. “He is an energetic child, and we feel fortunate that the cancer was removed,” Ms. Leba noted. “We are grateful for all the support we received during this struggle. My mother and sister were incredibly helpful, checking in regularly and sending clothes and diapers.”

She also expressed deep appreciation for the WOWS Kids Fiji foundation, which assisted with transportation, medical expenses, and groceries, saying, “Their help has meant so much to us.”

Ms. Leba concluded, “We are truly blessed and thankful to the doctors, our family, and WOWS Kids for everything they have done for us.”
