On Monday, Mitieli Navori’s father tragically lost his life in a fire incident. Despite this heart-wrenching loss, Navori found strength in his teammates from Ratu Kadavulevu School, helping them secure the Vodafone Super Deans under-14 title the following day.
Grief-stricken but determined, Navori and his teammates dedicated the win to his late father as they played on Laucala Bay. Facing a 7-8 deficit against Mahatma Gandhi Memorial School at halftime, RKS rallied in the second half to clinch a 22-8 victory.
As fans celebrated their impressive performance, it was clear to the team that they were playing for a greater purpose, as emotional tears were shed during the post-match huddle.
“It wasn’t an easy week for the team in preparing for the final, but we thank God for seeing us through. Even though I lost my father this week, I am grateful for the strength he gave me to carry on with my brothers. I can only thank God for guiding me this far,” Navori expressed.
He received the news of his father’s passing while at school but decided to play, believing that it was what his father would have wanted. Navori’s dad was a devoted supporter of his rugby endeavors and the school, often volunteering for team activities.
Throughout the week leading to the final, Navori was supported by the school principal, teachers, parents, alumni, and especially his teammates. “He is the oldest of two siblings and a pillar of strength for the boys; his resilience boosted their morale,” noted team manager Eta Vakalutugone.
In a show of solidarity, RKS principal Ilaisa Waqalala wore a number 12 jersey in support of Navori, who had a plaster on his hand bearing the words “Rip Tou” (rest in peace, dad). Waqalala announced that Navori would take the trophy back to Nadroumai, with plans for it to return to Delainakaikai following the funeral next Tuesday. Additionally, he declared that each player would keep the jersey they wore during the final.
The team also received $2000 in prize money, while flanker Gabriel Ray Tuinaceva was awarded Player of the Match. The losing finalists, MGM, received $1000.
