The Tritons Swimming Club based in Suva is aiming to secure additional medals at the Fiji Swimming Age Group Nationals taking place at the Damodar Aquatic Centre in Laucala. Coach Willie Elasia is optimistic about his team, which consists of around 35 to 40 swimmers aged between 9 and 22 years.

Although the squad is currently facing challenges due to exams and their school responsibilities, they remain focused on maximizing their performance during the competition. Elasia highlighted the significance of enjoying the experience while striving for success in the pool.

“The preparations haven’t been ideal as it’s exam time, and many of our swimmers are students. It’s not the outcome we desired, but we have to make do with what we have,” Elasia stated. “Our main objective is to earn more medals for my team in this two-day event. We have a young group, so we’re all about enjoying the competition and increasing our medal count.”

Among the club’s members is Pacific Games gold medallist Hansel McCaig, who is also gearing up for the World Aquatics Swimming Championships in Budapest, Hungary, scheduled for December. This competition serves as important preparation for him as he readies for the international arena.

Despite the rainy conditions, Elasia noted that the competition has been marked by enthusiasm and dedication from all participants. “It’s wonderful to see so many young swimmers out there enjoying the competition. Even with the rain, they are all smiling and embracing the contest,” he remarked.
