The Tritons Swimming Club from Suva is aiming for increased success at the Fiji Swimming Age Group Nationals taking place at the Damodar Aquatic Centre in Laucala. Coach Willie Elasia is optimistic about his squad, which comprises around 35 to 40 swimmers aged between 9 and 22.

Despite the current exam period and school obligations posing challenges, the team is focused on making the most of their competitive experience. Elasia highlighted the significance of enjoying the moment while also aiming for success in the pool.

“The preparations haven’t been ideal due to exams, as most of our swimmers are students. It’s not the situation we wished for, but we must make the best of it,” stated Elasia. “Our primary goal is to secure more medals for the team over these two days of competition. We have a young team, so our focus is on enjoying the competition and increasing our medal count.”

Hansel McCaig, a gold medallist from the Pacific Games, is also part of the Tritons Swimming Club and is preparing for the upcoming World Aquatics Swimming Championships in Budapest, Hungary, scheduled for December. This competition provides him with essential training as he prepares for international events.

Despite the rainy conditions, Elasia noted that the competition has been filled with enthusiasm and determination from all participants. “It’s wonderful to see so many young swimmers enjoying the competition. Even in the rain, they are smiling and making the most of the experience.”
