Tritons Swimming Club from Suva aims to secure additional medals at the Fiji Swimming Age Group Nationals held at the Damodar Aquatic Centre in Laucala. Coach Willie Elasia has shown confidence in his team, which comprises around 35-40 swimmers aged between 9 and 22 years.
The team is determined to excel in the competition despite facing challenges such as exams and school obligations. Elasia highlighted the significance of enjoying the experience while striving for success in the pool.
He noted, “The preparations are not ideal as it’s exam time, and most of our swimmers are students. It’s not what we desired in our raider, but we will make do with what we have. The main goal is to secure more medals for my team over these two days of competition. We have a young team, so we are focused on enjoying the competition and collecting more medals.”
Pacific Games gold medallist Hansel McCaig is also competing for the Triton Swimming Club as he prepares for the World Aquatics Swimming Championships in Budapest, Hungary, scheduled for December. This local competition serves as valuable training for him as he readies for the international event.
Despite inclement weather, Elasia remarked that the competition has been marked by enthusiasm and determination among all participants. “It’s wonderful to see many young swimmers participating and enjoying the competition. Even with the rain, they are smiling and having a great time,” he added.
