Tritons Swimming Club from Suva is aiming for increased success at the Fiji Swimming Age Group Nationals held at the Damodar Aquatic Centre in Laucala. Coach Willie Elasia is optimistic about his team of about 35-40 swimmers, aged 9 to 22.

Despite the hurdles posed by exams and school commitments, the team is committed to maximizing their performance during the competition. Elasia highlighted the significance of enjoying the journey while striving for achievements in the pool.

“The preparations aren’t ideal given it’s exam season, and the majority of our swimmers are students. It’s not what we hoped for in our readiness, but we must make do with what we have,” Elasia remarked. He emphasized that the primary goal is to earn more medals during the two-day event, expressing confidence in the talents of his young team, stating, “We’re just enjoying the competition and aiming for more medals.”

Among the participants is Pacific Games gold medallist Hansel McCaig, who is also preparing for the World Aquatics Swimming Championships in Budapest, Hungary, this December. This local competition is serving as critical training for him as he readies himself for the international event.

Despite the inclement weather, Elasia noted the enthusiasm and determination displayed by all the competitors. “It’s wonderful to see so many young swimmers out there enjoying the competition. Even with the rain, they’re smiling and making the most of it.”
