The Child Wellbeing Centre is currently offering support to 25 boys, as reported by Lynda Tabuya, the Minister of Women, Children and Social Protection. This center works in partnership with Inspire Pacific, an NGO that has implemented a rehabilitation initiative in Namosi, aimed at aiding boys in their transition away from street life.
Minister Tabuya explained that the pilot program is designed to transform the boys’ mindsets through counseling and the development of healthier social relationships. She stated, “We focus on providing counseling and assisting them in finding a positive circle of friends. It’s important for them to leave behind their old friendships and form new ones that will uplift them.” The program also incorporates educational training and includes hands-on activities such as farming.
A key component of the Child Wellbeing Centre’s approach is the reintegration of these boys back into their families. Furthermore, Ms. Tabuya highlighted that the initiative addresses substance abuse issues in collaboration with St. Giles Hospital and the Stress Management Board at CWM Hospital.
Recognizing the growing drug crisis in the community, she called for the establishment of a specialized Child Drug Rehabilitation Centre to focus on the clinical aspects of detoxification prior to the boys engaging in the rehabilitation program. Proposals from international drug rehabilitation facilities are being gathered for this purpose, with plans to submit these to the Cabinet following discussions with the Ministry of Health and potential donors.
Minister Tabuya acknowledged the alarming increase in drug-related cases, citing daily arrests by the police. She emphasized that while the use of substances may seem like a coping mechanism for stress, it is not a healthy option for parents and guardians to condone.
This initiative reflects a comprehensive approach to not only rehabilitating young boys but also addressing the broader societal challenges linked to substance abuse. It offers hope for positive change and emphasizes the importance of community support and family reintegration in fostering healthier futures for these youths.
