Fiji’s natural beauty is overshadowed by the growing issue of waste, particularly plastic waste, according to local resident Daveta Liku. At 62 years old, Liku has dedicated herself to transforming plastic waste into stunning home decorations, showcasing how creativity can combat pollution.
Hailing from Rewa and connected to Serua, Liku has been an active member of the Soqosoqo Vakamarama iTaukei (SSV) in Serua since 1985. She recently attended the organization’s centennial anniversary, where she reflected on the impact of their programs in her life. Liku expressed her concern for the environment, highlighting the lack of consideration people show towards waste management in Fiji.
She mentioned, “I began actively participating in the SSV in 1985, and I’ve learned to create handmade items like mats, baskets, brooms, and jewelry. My latest project involves crafting flower art from recycled materials such as plastic bottles and noodle packets. It’s fulfilling to see these items turned into beautiful decorations.”
Liku emphasizes that people can generate income by recycling and repurposing materials. She proposes that individuals could sell their creative creations for around $5, thereby encouraging others to decorate their homes with eco-friendly artwork. Her passion for these projects is evident as she prepares to showcase her work at an upcoming expo.
In her advocacy for environmental awareness, Liku urges communities to acknowledge the repercussions of neglecting the environment. “Awareness is everywhere, and recycling can generate extra income. We need to wake up and realize that we can support our families through these initiatives,” she stated.
