In the Solove Sector of Fiji, an inspiring success story is emerging that showcases the determination and creativity of the local sugarcane farming community. Sanjay Murti, a 47-year-old father of two and the founder of Isharat Farm Services, has significantly changed his life and positively impacted numerous cane farmers by providing essential tractor services in the area.
Having left school after Form 4, Murti initially worked as a cane harvester before becoming a manager at Food Process (Batiri Citrus Farm). His pivotal moment came when he spotted a substantial opportunity within Fiji’s sugarcane industry, spurred by a new initiative from Fiji Sugar Corporation.
In 2022, with the support of Fiji Sugar Corporation Limited (FSC) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Murti made the daring decision to establish a transport service. He recognized a pressing need for tractor services in the sector, which was hindering farmers’ ability to prepare their land.
“I noticed a shortage of tractors, making it tough for growers to get their fields ready,” Murti stated. “Many farmers struggled to make upfront payments, but thanks to FSC’s business plan and work order system, I was able to provide services without requiring immediate cash.”
Starting with just one tractor, Murti used his knowledge from Food Process to assist local farmers in land preparation. His commitment to delivering reliable services quickly gained recognition among farmers throughout the region.
Today, his business has grown substantially, operating a fleet of six tractors along with various essential farming implements such as disc ploughs, tillers, slashers, and boom sprayers—all critical tools for successful sugarcane farming.
“With perseverance and the backing of FSC field officials and my team, I managed to expand my business,” Murti shared. “The work order system enabled me to run it like a true business, benefiting the farmers as well.”
In addition to his service business, Murti has returned to cane farming, successfully cultivating 7.5 acres this year and planning to further expand his operations.
