Transforming the Conversation: Fiji’s Fight Against Suicide

Between 2016 and 2021, the Fiji Police Force reported a total of 1,276 suicide cases and attempts. This translates to an average of 212 incidents per year, with approximately half resulting in fatalities.

Minister for Health and Medical Services, Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu, brought this issue to light during a parliamentary session on Friday when asked about the ministry’s efforts in suicide prevention.

Dr. Lalabalavu highlighted that 2019 had the highest recorded number of suicide and attempted suicide cases at 244, with the Western Division consistently showing the most incidents each year over the past six years.

He emphasized the need to transform the narrative around suicide, suggesting a shift from silence and stigma to one of openness and support. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that around 800,000 individuals die by suicide globally each year.

The minister urged everyone to engage in conversations about suicide and prevention, asserting that even small discussions can foster a more supportive and understanding community.

“By starting these important dialogues, we can dismantle barriers, enhance awareness, and cultivate a stronger culture of support,” he stated. He encouraged conversations to take place in various community settings, including churches, mosques, sports venues, and social gatherings.
