Transforming Silence: Fiji’s Urgent Call for Suicide Prevention Conversations

Between 2016 and 2021, the Fiji Police Force reported 1,276 instances of suicide and attempted suicide. This averages out to approximately 212 cases per year, with about half resulting in fatalities.

This information was brought to light by Minister for Health and Medical Services Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu during a parliamentary session last Friday while he addressed questions about the ministry’s suicide prevention initiatives.

Dr. Lalabalavu noted that 2019 saw the highest number of reported suicide and attempted suicide cases, totaling 244, with the Western Division consistently recording the most cases annually for six consecutive years.

He emphasized the need to change the perception of suicide, advocating for a shift from a culture of silence and stigma to one characterized by openness, understanding, and support.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 800,000 individuals die by suicide globally each year.

Dr. Lalabalavu urged everyone to engage in conversations about suicide and its prevention, reinforcing that even small discussions could contribute to fostering a supportive and understanding community.

He encouraged initiating these crucial conversations in various settings, including churches, mosques, sports fields, and social gatherings, stating, “Let’s start this conversation.”
