Transforming Silence: A Call to Action for Fiji’s Mental Health

The Ministry of Health has reported a total of 1,276 cases of suicide and attempted suicide in Fiji from 2016 to 2021, averaging approximately 213 cases annually, with nearly half resulting in death. The year 2019 saw the highest number of incidents, recording 244 cases, with the Western Division consistently having the most cases each year during this six-year period.

Minister for Health and Medical Services, Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu, emphasized the importance of transforming perceptions around suicide, advocating for a shift from a culture of silence and stigma to one that promotes openness, understanding, and support. He called for everyone to engage in discussions about suicide and its prevention.

Dr. Lalabalavu noted that according to the World Health Organization’s Comprehensive Mental Health Action Plan (2013-2030), suicide is the second leading cause of death among individuals aged 15 to 29 worldwide. He underscored that each suicide has significant emotional, social, and economic repercussions, impacting families and communities globally.

In recognition of World Suicide Prevention Day, the Ministry of Health will hold a candlelight vigil tonight at 6 pm at Ratu Sukuna Park.
