Transforming Nasaulevu: A New Era in Fijian Tourism Awaits!

A significant integrated tourism development project is set to launch at Nasaulevu Island, as announced following the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the island’s owners, the Nakovacake Development Trust (NDT), the Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF), and the Asian Development Bank (ADB). This agreement outlines a master plan for the island, which spans 747 acres and is located across from Denarau Port Marina, near Fantasy Island.

NDT chairman Brigadier-General Manoa Gadai, who also serves as the Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces’ Joint Task Force, stated that the signing represents the start of a critical journey aimed at alleviating poverty and empowering the community and future generations. He emphasized that this MOU signifies a transformative phase, particularly regarding the expansive tourist development planned for Nasaulevu.

Construction is anticipated to commence in May of next year. Brigadier-General Gadai highlighted that creating the Revised Masterplan for the Nasaulevu Integrated Tourism Development Project will take six to nine months, incorporating a feasibility study. Negotiations on forming a joint venture with FNPF and ADB will begin during this planning phase, with subsequent agreements to be signed based on the finalized options.

Cathy Marsh, ADB director general, revealed that the initial budget for the master plan is set at $300,000, with plans to deploy specialists to initiate development work before the year’s end.

Minister for Public Works, Meteorology and Transport Ro Filipe Tuisawau affirmed the government’s commitment to supporting landowners as they move toward greater economic involvement. NDT secretary Anare Naivutevute remarked that the master plan aims to position the hub as a unique destination within the South Pacific.

The ADB is particularly interested in funding the construction of various facilities, including resorts, commercial and residential lots, and a cultural center designed to draw tourists to Fiji and enrich their cultural experience.
