In the Solove Sector of Fiji, a remarkable transformation is taking place that showcases the resilience and creativity within the sugarcane farming community. Sanjay Murti, a 47-year-old father of two and founder of Isharat Farm Services, has made a significant impact by stepping in as a tractor service provider, fulfilling a crucial need in the industry.
After leaving formal education in Form 4, Murti began his career as a cane harvester and later managed Batiri Citrus Farm. His breakthrough came when he identified a substantial gap in Fiji’s sugarcane sector, driven by an initiative from the Fiji Sugar Corporation.
In 2022, with the backing of the Fiji Sugar Corporation Limited and the Ministry of Agriculture, Murti boldly launched his transport service. He recognized a shortage of tractors, which hindered farmers’ ability to prepare their land effectively.
“I noticed that many farmers were struggling to afford upfront payments for tractor services. With the business plan concept from FSC and their work order system, I could provide services without requiring immediate cash,” Murti stated. “It turned out to be beneficial for everyone involved.”
Beginning with a single tractor, Murti leveraged his prior experience to aid local farmers in land preparation. His commitment to delivering dependable services quickly gained the attention of other farmers in the region.
Today, Murti’s business has grown considerably, now operating a fleet of six tractors along with essential implements such as disc ploughs, tillers, slashers, and boom sprayers—tools that are critical for effective sugarcane farming.
“Thanks to perseverance and support from FSC personnel, I’ve been able to expand the business,” he said. “The work order system enabled me to manage it like a proper business, benefiting the farmers as well.”
In addition to his tractor services, Murti has also resumed cane farming, cultivating 7.5 acres this year with plans for further growth.
